Tips for an air cooler?

Are they worth it at all, or just glorified fans in a cute rectangular container?
This afternoon, I saw about fifty different models at the Aeon Mall, ranging from a hundred dollars to well, to much more than I could imagine anyone paying for this thing. What is a good price to pay, and is the Aeon department store a good place to look?
