After being captured by the armies of Hell, Inarius expressed his need to end the eternal conflict to his captor Lilith, daughter of Mephisto. She, too, shared Inarius’ sentiment and chose to free him. Shortly after, the 2 fell in love and searched for a way to escape the clutches of Heaven and Hell. Inarius stole the Worldstone and used it to produce a separate reality, dubbing it Sanctuary. For a time, he lived there peacefully alongside Lilith along with a handful of sympathetic angels and demons.

The Birth Of Humanity

Eventually, Inarius and Lilith had children that became referred to as Nephalem. The angels and demons feared the strength of Nephalem and sought to slaughter all of them. Like a momma bear protecting her cubs, Lilith lashed to protect her children, killing all of the angels and demons which had originally sided together.

Once Inarius discovered, he couldn’t bring himself to kill her, so he instead banished her towards the Void. Fast-forward an aeon or two, and also the Nephalem have degraded into what's now referred to as humanity. While they don’t possess the powers they did before, they still hold the duality of excellent and evil - an inheritance that only their parents could provide them with.
