Thanks, random bad luck fairy, I could've done without the hard drive fail.

Last September we purchased a 2 TB HP SSD, one of those new(ish) hard-drives-on-a-card thingies. Never one to completely trust new technology, I insisted it be used to hold non-essential data. That is, data that can be easily downloaded or re-obtained somehow. So the husband put his entire video games library on it. Everything was going along swimmingly until yesterday morning.

Upon booting the computer, Paul got "HDD Locked!". Apparently, mysteriously in the middle of the night, while the machine was off, his brand new SSD got some critical non-coronavirus bug and died a horrible, looks-to-be-permanent death.

It's under warranty, so we have a note into the manufacturer for a replacement RMA so we can send them the drive. Anyone have any ideas for things to try before we send this off?

Have you tried to manually eject the SSD by pressing the right click and the eject button? It might work if the driver for reading portable SSDs has glitched. In other cases, this will mean that something broke in the SSD. You should go to a service and repair it. After replacing the SSD, they will need to let everything from the SSD. They make this to delete the field that could create this problem. But, this is not such a big problem because there are such services like salvagedata.com that can help you recover the most important files you had.
