Title: Microsoft's New Xbox Controller Set to Launch with Next-Gen Hardware
It seems that, as part of the now-cancelled mid-gen Xbox consoles, Brooklin and Ellewood, Microsoft had planned a new controller, codenamed "Sebile." The controller, detailed in recent filings, highlights a range of features, including "direct-to-cloud" connectivity, reminiscent of Google’s Stadia service, along with various other enhancements.
Although Brooklin and Ellewood have been shelved, I’ve learned that Sebile is very much still in development, with plans to release alongside the next-generation Xbox hardware.
A patent filed this month in the United States unmistakably points to Sebile, particularly when you look at the unique plastic housing configuration, as first spotted by Tech4Gamers. In previous leaks about the Sebile controller, one peculiar feature stood out—the grips, which have an unusual design that some compared to trousers. But, as the new patent reveals, this design is intentional and serves multiple purposes. Microsoft intends to maintain the ergonomic design of its existing Xbox controllers, but the grips also house new, advanced haptic motors. These motors are capable of delivering "high definition" vibrations throughout the controller, ensuring consistent performance regardless of how the user holds the device.
The patent further explains that these motors can generate varied pulse patterns and vibrations, mimicking different sounds and motions. Interestingly, the system is also backward-compatible, meaning it can replicate older-style vibrations from previous Xbox controllers without requiring developers to make any adjustments for the new hardware.
Another exciting feature of the Sebile controller is its cloud gaming capability, drawing inspiration from Stadia. It will connect directly to cloud-based games via Wi-Fi, bypassing Bluetooth to minimize latency. This direct connection will allow players to stream games with reduced input lag—a key reason why Stadia was perceived as faster compared to other cloud gaming platforms during its time. By connecting directly to devices on an active list, players will have a smoother experience when streaming games to different devices.
However, it’s important to note that this controller is unlikely to be released before the next generation of Xbox consoles. Microsoft is reportedly working on both a handheld console and a more traditional console to succeed the Xbox Series X. Additionally, there’s growing speculation that Microsoft may allow OEMs like Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS to produce Xbox consoles, targeting markets and price points where Microsoft has yet to establish a strong presence.
The Sebile controller is also expected to feature swappable and rechargeable batteries, Bluetooth 5.2, and a "lift-to-wake" power-on feature. Microsoft is focusing on improving the durability and repairability of the device, with a more sustainable construction using recycled materials and less reliance on resin and glue, making it easier for users to repair their controllers. As for pricing, all these new features likely won’t come cheap, though it’s likely that Microsoft will continue offering the current Xbox controllers alongside the Sebile, catering to different needs. Let’s not forget that there’s still the highly anticipated Xbox Elite Controller Series 3 to consider.
