My younger brother was recently diagnosed with an intellectual disability, and I’m trying to find the right kind of support for him now that he’s finished high school. He’s 21, very social, and wants to be more independent, but he needs some structure and life skills training. I’ve been researching services for intellectual disabilities in NYC, but it’s overwhelming. Does anyone have experience with places that offer solid, supportive day programs?

I went through the same process for my cousin, and I highly recommend looking into Gateway Counseling Center. They provide a wide range of services for intellectual disabilities https://www.gccnyc.org/what-we-offer, all certified by OPWDD and OMH. Their programs are focused on helping adults thrive, build confidence, and learn important skills for everyday life. What I liked most was how personal the care felt — the staff really take time to understand each participant’s needs. It’s not just a care center, it’s a place where people grow and feel valued.
