Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival in China, is the most important traditional holiday in China. Chinese New Year 2017 is on Saturday, January 28th, 2017.
When Is Chinese New Year 2017?
The Most Important Dates of Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year's Eve: the day of family reunions
On a Chinese calendar: 除夕 Chúxī /choo-sshee/ 'getting-rid-of evening'
Chinese New Year's Day: the day of (close) family visits and New Year greetings
On a Chinese calendar: 初一 Chūyī /choo-ee/ 'first 1'
How Is the Date for Chinese New Year Determined?
Chinese New Year's Day is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar.
The date is different each year on the Gregorian (internationally-used) calendar, but is always between January 21th and February 20th.
Why Is Chinese New Year on the Date It Is?
Like Christmas/New Year in other countries, Chinese New Year is simply a much-needed winter holiday at an auspicious time.
Rest Before a New Farming Year
Chinese New Year was set to coincide with the slack time just before a new year of farm work begins, as a time of preparation.
When most Chinese were farmers this made sense. Now 55% of China's population is urban (a generation ago it was 25%), but 100+ million return to their rural roots for CNY.
Chinese traditionally celebrated the start of a new year of farm work, and wished/prayed for a good harvest. This has now evolved into celebrating the start of a new business year and wishing for profits and success in various vocations.
The Traditional 'Start of Spring'
China's traditional solar calendar's first solar term is called 'Start of Spring', hence the "Spring Festival" — another name for Chinese New Year.
'Start of Spring' precedes the start of spring weather for much of China, starting about February 5, and the lunar calendar year always starts within half a month of that.

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the "Year". The "Year" looks like an ox with a lion head and inhabits in the sea. At the night of New Year's Eve, the "Year" will come out to harm people, animals, and properties. Later, people found that the "Year" fears the color red, fire, and loud sounds. Therefore, for self-protection, people formed the habit of posting red Dui Lian in front of their house as well as launching fireworks, and hanging lanterns at year end.

Chinese New Year is the time that everyone gather with family members. No matter how far their family members separate all across the world, they will come and meet together to the place they call "Home". So its not about the " place " but the people that they " meet ". Because in chinese tradition, the meaning of home is together with family we love not about the " place we call house only".

Lunar New Year, which also encompasses Chinese New Year or “Spring Festival,” begins on Jan. 27 and ends Feb. 2. While Chinese New Year is part of Lunar New Year, Lunar New Year is not necessarily Chinese New Year — it is more of a blanket term that is celebrated by more than one culture.
Chinese New Year is based on the ancient Chinese calendar that existed when the Shang Dynasty was in power during the 14th Century B.C. One common tradition includes gifting red envelopes, or “lai see,” which are filled with “lucky money.” These envelopes are most commonly given to children by their parents. The amount of money doesn’t matter as it is only symbolic, however, it is usually an even number

Chinese New Year, also known as the "Spring Festival" (simplified Chinese 春节; traditional Chinese 春節; Pinyin: Chūn Jié) in modern Mainland China, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between 21 January and 20 February. In 2017, the first day of the Chinese New Year is on Saturday, 28 January, initiating the year of the Rooster.

The New Year festival is centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mauritius and Australia, and the Philippines.Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the lunar new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese New Year vary widely. Often, the evening preceding Chinese New Year's Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red color paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of "good fortune" or "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity". Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes. Among about one third of the Mainland population, or 500 million Northerners, dumplings (especially those of vegetarian fillings) feature prominently in the meals celebrating the festival.

Chinese New Year, also known as Luna New Year, means a lot to those who celebrate it.
It is really a time for family to get together, it is a very value moment for those who moved to a far away city/country to look for job, this is the time where they will make every effort to go home and see their parents and close relatives.

Chinese New Year is celebrated annually by Chinese all around the world. It lasts for 15 days from the 1st to the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. During this festive period, relatives will pay visits to each other and those who are married will handout red packets containing monies as token of gifts and blessings to the younger generation (unmarried) and elders. Delicacies will be served and events such as the lion and dragon dance will bring joy and prosperity to everyone.
