Working with pdf files

Working with pdf files is not so easy if you do not have an acrobat reader. But if I find alternatives? What do you advise?

I always did it through Photoshop to be honest, because I was too lazy to find an acrobat license.

I often send PDF documents via email or other means, and there are different file size limits everywhere. For example, I can't mail a file that's too big, and the easiest way for me to compress it is with the online tool I found here. Moreover, it's cool that all the data inside the file remains unchanged and in same quality.
