I totally get where you're coming from! I went through the same thing with my dress. It fit well off the rack, but it wasn’t perfect—and perfect is what you want for your wedding day. I had my gown taken in slightly at the waist, and my seamstress adjusted the hem because it was just a tiny bit too long, even with heels. I also got a French bustle added, which I highly recommend because it makes such a difference when you transition from ceremony to reception.
One thing I learned is that not all tailors are experienced with wedding dresses. You need someone who specializes in bridal wear since these gowns are way more complex than regular dresses. I found a fantastic Alterations Tailor who did an amazing job on mine. They knew exactly how to work with delicate fabrics, intricate lace, and even the beading. Honestly, I wouldn’t trust just anyone with a wedding gown.
Also, make sure to do at least two fittings—one after the initial changes and another closer to the big day. Bodies fluctuate, and even a tiny change can make a difference in how the dress fits. If you’re adding a bustle, have a bridesmaid or your maid of honor come with you to learn how to do it. The last thing you want is to be struggling with a bunch of loops and buttons when you should be enjoying your night!
