I recently bought my wedding dress, and while I absolutely love it, I feel like it could fit just a little better. It’s not that it’s too big or too small, but there are tiny details I’d love to adjust—like the way the bodice sits on my waist and the length of the sleeves. I also want to add a bustle so I can move around more easily during the reception. I’m a bit nervous about finding the right tailor because, let’s be honest, this is the dress of my life! Has anyone here had alterations done on their gown? How did it turn out? Any advice on what to look for in a seamstress or what alterations are worth doing?

I totally get where you're coming from! I went through the same thing with my dress. It fit well off the rack, but it wasn’t perfect—and perfect is what you want for your wedding day. I had my gown taken in slightly at the waist, and my seamstress adjusted the hem because it was just a tiny bit too long, even with heels. I also got a French bustle added, which I highly recommend because it makes such a difference when you transition from ceremony to reception.

One thing I learned is that not all tailors are experienced with wedding dresses. You need someone who specializes in bridal wear since these gowns are way more complex than regular dresses. I found a fantastic Alterations Tailor who did an amazing job on mine. They knew exactly how to work with delicate fabrics, intricate lace, and even the beading. Honestly, I wouldn’t trust just anyone with a wedding gown.

Also, make sure to do at least two fittings—one after the initial changes and another closer to the big day. Bodies fluctuate, and even a tiny change can make a difference in how the dress fits. If you’re adding a bustle, have a bridesmaid or your maid of honor come with you to learn how to do it. The last thing you want is to be struggling with a bunch of loops and buttons when you should be enjoying your night!
