I’m updating my boat’s safety gear and came across different types of personal flotation devices. I understand that some are worn, while others are throwable. I want to make sure I’m fully prepared for emergencies, but I’m not sure which type would be the most practical to have on board. Can anyone explain the benefits of a Type IV PFD and whether it’s a necessary addition to my boat’s safety equipment?

It’s great that you’re thinking about safety—having the right flotation devices can make a huge difference in an emergency. A Type IV PFD is a throwable flotation device, like a ring buoy or cushion, designed to assist someone in the water until they can be rescued. Unlike life jackets, it’s not meant to be worn but is essential for quick response situations. I always keep at least one on board because it provides an extra layer of safety, especially if someone falls overboard unexpectedly. Many boating regulations also require having one, so it’s definitely a smart investment.

That makes a lot of sense! I’ll make sure to add one to my safety gear—better to be prepared for any situation. Thanks for the advice!
