Answer:

20 bottles / 2 emptied = 10 bottles
10 emptied / 2 = 5 bottles
5 / 2 = 2.5 a.k.a 2(New), 1(Emptied)
2 / 2 = 1 bottle
Last 2 emptied get another 1
Total bottles drank = 20 + 10 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 39 bottles
